Tribute to Manoj Nair
In a unique fusion of different creative streams, more than 80 artists, musicians and writers will come together to pay their tributes to a journalist, in a four-month long series of exhibitions and artistic events, four months after his untimely demise.
Manoj Nair, who was highly regarded as an art writer, music theorist, critic and curator, passed away at his beach house, after serving as an editorial director of the recently concluded Kochi Muziris Biennale. It is most appropriate that Manoj Nair’s friends and artists are commemorating him through the exhibition series titled “Between the Lines” at Gallery 27 in Mattancherry, a small town which Manoj Nair was really attached to.
It was a place he spent a lot of time researching along with Biennale founders before he subsequently relocated to Kochi after wrapping up his career as a journalist in Delhi and while donning the hat of a cultural studies lecturer at Central St Martin’s, London.
Manoj Nair always wanted to do a large scale exhibition in Kochi and he had expressed that wish to Gallery 27. Manoj Nair also had suggested many titles for the show, out of which Gallery 27 found ‘Between the Lines’ as the most poetic title, as it alludes to literature, visual arts and music simultaneously, and as these are three art forms that Manoj followed religiously and developed lifelong friendships in. ‘Between the Lines’ as a show is composed of three parts, like waves in a musical concert.
The first wave of ‘Between the Lines’ will begin in the first week of October, which will feature more than 25 artists – friends of Manoj Nair, including painters, photographers, sculptors and performing artists who will lovingly display their creations in the memory of more than three decades of Manoj’s active inculcation of friendships in art and culture. Subsequent waves of ‘Between the Lines’ will happen in November and December of 2019 with artists from various cities in India and abroad.
