BETWEEN THE LINES

The expression “Between the Lines” usually refers to the act of deriving hidden meanings in a literary text. While literature as a form primarily resorts to the beauty of language, the real power of literature is in what is unsaid. Implied meaning, as it is, can be translated to implied lines in the open spaces or implied melodies in musical silence. Human ability to fill in the blanks is at the core of orchestrating artistic creations. Death can be read as blankness; it can be heard as silence. If the artistic blankness or silence alludes to death or absence, then the aesthetic device of reading ‘between the lines’ take on a philosophical dimension of being and nothingness.

It is extremely rare that more than 80 artists, musicians and writers come together to pay tribute to a journalist, as a four-month long series of exhibitions and artistic events, four months after his untimely demise. Manoj Nair, who was highly regarded as an art writer, music theorist, critic and curator, passed away in the first week of June in his beach house in Fort Kochi, after serving as the editorial director of the recently concluded Kochi Muziris Biennale. It is most appropriate that Manoj Nair’s friends and artists are commemorating him through the exhibition series titled “Between the Lines” in Gallery 27 in Mattancherry, a small town which Manoj Nair was really attached to, while spending time researching the place along with biennale founders and subsequently relocated to Kochi after his roles as a journalist in Delhi and a cultural studies lecturer in London.

Manoj Nair always wanted to do a large scale exhibition in Kochi and he had expressed that wish to Gallery 27. Manoj Nair also had suggested many titles for the show, out of which Gallery 27 found ‘Between the Lines’ as the most poetic title, as it alludes to literature, visual arts and music simultaneously, as these are three art forms that Manoj followed religiously and developed lifelong friendships. ‘Between the Lines’ as a show is composed of three parts, like waves in a musical concert.

The first wave of ‘Between the Waves’ will open on 19th October, which will feature more than 25 artists – friends of Manoj Nair, including painters, photographers, sculptors and performing artists who will lovingly display their creations in the memory of more than three decades of Manoj’s active inculcation of friendships in art and culture. Subsequent waves of ‘Between the Lines’ will happen in November and December of 2019 with artists from various cities in India and abroad. The first wave of the exhibition is from October 19 to November 16, immediately followed by the opening of the second wave on November 23 and it concludes on December 21. The opening of the third wave coincides with the holiday week of New Year celebrations in Fort Kochi, on December 28th 2019 and goes on till January 31st 2020. Following the three waves of “Between the Lines” in Mattancherry, the exhibition will travel across the harbour to the mainland Ernakulam for a week long exhibition of all the artworks at the Durbar Hall Gallery.
